The River House, Sandwich (1 mile from course)

River House occupies a delightful situation close to the centre of this historic Cinque Port town and is within walking distance of all the excellent and diverse selection of shops, pubs, restaurants and amenities within this picturesque town.

Sandwich has existed since at least 664 AD and was one of the first towns in England to have a mayor and borough status. It was, for several centuries, the largest and most important port in England and in medieval times was one of the five ‘Cinque’ main ports, along with Dover, Hythe, Romney and Hastings responsible for the defence of the South-East coast and the channel.

In 1028 King Canute granted a charter to the monks of Christ Church, Canterbury to operate a ferry across the river and collect tolls and in 1194 Richard Lionheart returned to England via Sandwich following his incarceration by the King of Germany whilst returning from the Third Crusade.

Today, Sandwich retains much of charm and character of its historic past, with its picturesque streets, jettied timber houses, Dutch gables, river frontage, ancient pubs, stores, quay gate and toll bridge.

From Strand Street, the oldest street in the town, the house is entered via a Georgian front door with portico, which opens to a spacious hall with limestone floor with access to the cloakroom and a delightful library/sitting room with fitted bookshelves and fireplace with coal effect fire.

Beyond the hall is the beautiful drawing room, rare in size for Sandwich, with an open inglenook fireplace and windows overlooking the walled garden.

This in turn leads through to an inner lobby and beyond to the well-fitted kitchen. There is then a study beyond which is a rear hall and a utility room with WC.

From the hall, a fine balustraded oak staircase rises to the first floor landing with access to a superb principal bedroom suite comprising a large double bedroom, dressing room with ‘his’ and ‘hers’ walk-in wardrobe cupboards and beyond to a spacious bathroom with bath and shower.

In addition there is a delightful landing study area and a large double bedroom with views to the river Stour with an ensuite bathroom with bath and shower.

The staircase then ascends to the second floor where there is an extensive sitting area off which there are two further double bedrooms, a bathroom and access to a superb further twin bedroom and shower room suite. From this bedroom there are French doors onto a sizeable terrace with railings and wonderful views over the rooftops of nearby houses.
